Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 9th June 2010

I´m feeling good, it´s June and the start of our 9th year with Saturday and Sunday sailing. I was on the water with Michael and the “Wayfarer” along with “Casi Casi”, “Dos amigos”, the “Magreger 26”. Then on Sunday, we were joined by Lyndon and the “Catapult Catamaran” plus “Devon Yawl” etc...

I was ashore on Sunday rigging my “Kittiwake” with my young helpmates Brooke and Drew, we will be sailing her next week. Sailing is a Sport for all ages; Why don´t we see more Families involved ?

The UK is top Nation in the World in the sport of Dinghy Sailing. British sailors have recently Won 10 medals from the the Princess Sofia sailing “World Cup Event” at Palma, Spain and the “Olympic Sailing Week” in Hyeres in France. The Royal Yachting Ass. in an effort to keep us at the top of the Sport are offering “Junior Membership” to Children age 8 to 11 year olds, the fee is only 5 pounds annually. They will receive an Activity book called “Go sailing” access to their own RYA website, plus a quarterly newsletter packed with fun stories and illustrations. “ Youth membership” is available for the 12 to 17 year olds; they would receive regular email news letters, competitions and importantly advice on making a “Career” in sailing, the annual fee 14 pounds. This is such a good deal, I phoned them to confirm it; if you want to know more call me.

I hope there is a repeat of the television series “The Boats that built Britain”on BBC TV. I didn´t see them all, let me know if hear any thing.

I know some of you were at the Port of Almeria last year to witness the “Extreme 40” Catamarans racing. It ´s all happening again this year. The dates are 9th to 12th of October. There will be 8 Teams competing with possibly 18-20 short races. The Catamarans have a crew of 4 plus an invited guest. I will let them know I´m available! It,s usually fast and furious and you can see it all from the Start to the Finish. Almeria is the final Event in the Series. The other venues being Séte in France, Cowes I of W in the UK. 31st of July to the 5th of August; If you are in the UK. Then Kiel in Germany, the penultimate Event at Trapani in Italy and the Final in Almeria. I´ll be booking our hotel room soon.

I remind any youngsters, boys or girls, if you want a job that could take you around the World, consider becoming a Sailing instructor working at the many Sailing Resorts.

Argan Baily is now the Skipper of a 70 ft Charter Yacht in the Mediterranean. Read his story on our website, click into “News Feature”, he was sailing a “Topper” with us in 2004.

Hope to see you in Garrucha at the weekend for a coffee at our Club house “El Rincon de Puerto”.

Take care.

Sailing News Sol Times - 2nd June 2010

“Here we are again, happy as can be”, I´ve just re rigged my “Kittiwake”. After years of being ashore, she is ready to take to the warm waters of the Mediterranean.

I fell in love with the “Kittiwake” at the Southampton Millenium Boat Show. She is half scale of a “Falmouth Quay Punt” from about 1890. Rigged as a Gaff rigged Yawl with 2 head sails, Main and Missen with a Bowsprit and Bumpkin, should I add a Top´sl ? I´m thinking about it.

Apart from our Classic and racing dinghies a new 17 ft 6 in. dinghy has arrived from Düsseldorf, Germany. The owner Bernard will be back with us in September as a new member. The dinghy looks good and is using an electric Outboard engine which is food for though, it´s clean, quiet and starts first time.

More good news of our Sailing Cruisers , Rodolfo will be adding his 10.5 metre Classic to the fleet this week when he takes up a berth on the New Marina. Rodolfo opened his Book Shop in Vera a few months ago, selling nautical books etc.... in English and Spanish. The shop is called “Nobel”, well worth a visit.

Do you remember the “Extreme 40” Sailing Series last year, It´s started again. You can see

“Close up” 40 ft Extreme Catamarans racing fast and furious in Almeria Port.

The first Event of the series was completed at Sete, France in May, the 2nd will be at Cowes,UK.

31st July to 5th Aug. the 3rd event at Kiel in Germany 26th to 29th of Aug. the 4th at Trapani, Italy. The 5th and Final event of the Series will be at Almeria Port, 9th to 12th October This year there are 8 teams competing, each Event lasts 4 days, with possibly 18 to 20 short races, you can see it all, from the Start to the Finish it,s not to be missed

The Icing on the cake : We will be at Garrucha on Saturday´s and Sunday´s, why? Because

we need to see the Osprey, Pastinac, Toppers,Cadet, Oppies, etc. on the water.

Call in at the Club House, El Rincon del Puerto for coffee 11 am, this weekend

Take care.
