Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 13th October 2010

“The Extreme 40 Catamaran”, Formula 1 Racing on the Sea. I would go along with that, having watched the Cats in action over 4 days in Almeria Port. They were short, sharp races lasting perhaps 15 minutes. At one time, I saw what I thought was going to be a collision, I waitedPaul Campbell JamesExtreme 40for the Crunch but no!

The windward hull of the Catamaran lifted over the stern of the other Cat. Then down to continue at speed, at the next cross the Cat had made up ground on his opponent . The Skipper was Paul Campbell-James, the youngest Skipper on the European Circuit. The 28 year old, started sailing of the age of 5, was racing of the age of 7, at 15 he won the “Optimist National Championships. He progressed to the “420” then on to the “49 er” a 2 man Skiff which could be the fastest monohull in the world. It requires a grate deal of skill, rather than physical strength.

I would guess you would need both of those attributes on “The Wave Muscat”The Extreme 40 Cat, where he is Skipper with his three equally profesional Crew.

Almeria was the final round of the 2010 European Series, so after Sete (France), Cowes (UK), Kiel (Germany), Trapani (Sicily), 130 Races across the five European Venues, it all came down to the final Race on the final day to decide the Winner of the European Series,it was”The Wave Muscat “ Paul Campbell James and Crew, 2nd “Groupe Edmond de Rothschild”, 3rd “ Ecover Sailing Team”, 4th “Oman Sail Masirah”.

There were 6 more Catamarans involved, which included “Rumbo Almeria”. She only competed in Almeria, not in the Series, but had a 2nd and 3rd in the last 2 Races. She is looking for

“Sponsorship” my answer to that is: why not vist all the Ports in Almeria; involve schools, colleges, Universities, Sailing Clubs, promote the Sport. Dont lock her away for another 12 monthes.

One new event was Dinghy Racing before the “Extreme 40´s”. “Optimists”, “Laser 4.7”, “Laser Radial s”, it was Stadium Style Racing. The Crews of the “Extreme 40´s” who were in V.I.P lounge could see it all. They were cheering the youngsters as they competed which was good to see.

It was reported that nearly 10.000 visitors were at the Port on Tuesday the 12th, the day of “El Pilar”. Now it back to work. Hope to see you on Saturday or Sunday, 11 am, at the Club house Rincon del Puerto. Garrucha.

Take care.

Sailing News Sol Times - 22nd September 2010

“We almost made it this time” as the song goes, that´s twice recently, we´ve had 9 boats on the water. I´m looking forward to the magic 10, when we can Splice the Mainbrace, that will happen when the rest of our Helmsmen and the Ladies, are back in the fold. I´m happy to tell you that´s only a third of the Fleet owned by the Club and Club members; I´ve just totted them up and it is over 30; yes it´s surprised me. Not bad when you think we started with 3 Oppies, 2 old Cadets and 2 old Mirror Dinghies. What we need now is couple of “Laser Picos” to help us get the youngsters on the water. Unfortunately the Hand of the Lottery Fund, will not reach out to us here in Spain.

It was great to see Trevor´s new wooden “Tide Way”, a real traditional “Swallows and Amazon´s” Classic. Sunday was good for the Membership too with a new 5 metre German sailing Dinghy and a Spanish 420.

Dont forget one of the biggest events in the racing calender, and this on our doorstep, the final event of the “Extreme 40 Catamaran” Series in Almería. This is: In Harbour, Stadium Style, Racing. You will witness the Start, the Race and the Finish, the duration of each race is only about 15 minutes; with 6 to 8 races each afternoon on the 10th, 11th, 12th of October. Remember, this is the Final Event of the 2010 Series, wich started in France then went on to England, Germany, Italy with the Final Spain, Almeria, where the Trophy will be presented to the Overall Winner.

As I write Trapani, in Sicily, plays Host to the penultimate round in the Series. It´s very tight at the Top of the Leader Board, with just 3 points separating the Top 3 boats. There isn´t a clear winner in the Fleet, so any thing can happen; the 2010 Champion will not be decided until the Final Event in Almeria. There is Entertainment ashore as well as on the Water. Hope to see you there.

Remember, Sailing is a Family Sport, you can all join in. Come and have a coffee and chat with us, at the Rincon Del Puerto, Garrucha.

Take care.
