Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 16th March 2011
When writing recently, I seem to have had a “Senior moment”, recalling the inauguration of the Santa Irene Sailing Club at the Artisan Center, back in 2002. There were 4 “Optimists” in the dinghy exhibition not three; 2 were built on my patio, one purchased in the UK, the other from Pepe Arez, of los Alcázares, Mar Menor. I only wish we could afford to purchase one of his 6 metres sail boats. You can see several of them at Aguilas, near the slipway, on the Marina. I had the use of one in our early days.
We´ve had good turn outs for coffee at the club house but the weather has damped our enthusiasm to rig the dinghies at our new dinghy park; perhaps we are waiting for “Summer Time” to arrive, remember its Sunday the 27th of March. Who remembers the good old days of “Double British Summer Time?”
Nevertheless, last Sunday 14 sailors were on the water in 3 sailing cruisers, Trevor and David were sailing the “Tideway” dinghy.
Rodolfo, who owns the largest and smallest Yachts in the Club, arrived with his Radio Controlled “International one metre” sailing yacht. There is some serious Racing taking place all over the World by very experienced sailors,we have met some of them. So four of us enjoyed sailing the “International one metre” in the quiet waters of the new Marina. The last “International one metre” Regatta, we attended, was in Almeria, where 46 Yachts were involved.
Another sail boat that has enjoyed the quiet waters on the Marina, has been the “Latina Rigged”sail boat which is moored near the slipway. I have spoken with the owner and perhaps one day, he will join us on the water.
Looking at the history of the “Latina Rig”, its goes back a long way. It is an Arab-Mediterranean Rig; if we sail in the Med. we should try to preserve it, along with the Square Rig and Gaff Rig of Northern Europe.
The “Barcelona World Race”, by the time you read this, we should know the finishing date. At the time of writing this article, the French Yacht “Virbac-Paprec 3” is leading, “Mapfre” the Spanish Yacht; the gap between them is about 400 miles. There is still a chance for “Mapfre” to be crowned Champion! The Yachts have pass through the Doldrums, the Gibraltar Straits and Mediterranean, we wish then “ Buna Suerte”.
Remember, you will find us each weekend, taking coffee at our Club House “El Rincon d Puerto”, 11 am onwards.
Take care.
