“Mad dogs and English men go out in the Mid-day Sun”. While the sailors took to the water at the Cuevas Canal, I didn´t sail but had too much Sun which put me in bed for three days. You would think at my age I would know better. After a few phone calls, we have decided to resume sailing in September.
I had a good meeting with the Jefe of the Garrucha Port Authority , looking at the Plan of the New Marina: the news is there will be a Provisional Slipway at some time in the near future. The long term plan is: there will be a Permanent Slipway near the Virgin “Carmen del Mar”in 2010; for the local fishermen, the Club and small boat sailors... We are looking forward to the day we can really establish our selves on a permanent site.
I am not thinking of giving up Cuevas, its a unique stretch of water, ideal for beginners and experts to train, it has all that you need.
During my “bed rest”, I´m not sure if it was hallucinations or was it me dreaming, I could see the Cuevas Canal as a “Laser Centre”. I know its minuscule in comparison to Weymouth and Portland but we need some thing like that to help Dinghy Sailing to grow in Southern Spain. I can see it now: the Laser Bug, the Pico, the Laser 4.7 etc. I wonder what Teresa Zabell would think of that idea, perhaps we should email her!
The fact is: if you want to buy a Class Sailing Dinghy in Southern Spain it is more than likely your contact will be in Barcelona. With a Coast line of more than 2500 miles and all the inland lakes, plus the Spanish Weather, dinghy sailing should be a fast growing sport.
British Sailors are again top of Olympic Racing taking the “Best Nation Prise” at the Delta Lloyd Regatta. Gold Medals in the Finn, Laser and the Women´s Keel boat, Silver in the Finn and Bronze in the 49er and 2.4mR.
Take care, see you in September.

Sailing News Sol Times - 29th July 2009
Last Sunday at the Cuevas Canal the spectators kept them selves in the shade, while the sailors took to the water. I didn´t sail but never the less, it seems I had too much of a good thing and needed two days rest after too much sun. You would think at my age I would know better.
Lets look to the future, September when I hope it will be cooler and may be some rain;Oh! Would-n-it be Lovely.
We had a good meeting with the “Jefe” of the Port Authority, in his office, looking at a plan of the New Marina. The news is : there will be a “Provisional Rampa” at some time in the near future, possibly September. The long term plan is: there will be a Permanent slipway near the Virgin Carmen del Mar by October 2010, which means the local fishermen and small boat sailors will launch nearer to open sea, away from the Commercial shipping. I´m looking forward to the day when we can really establish a Sailing Club, we can all be proud of.
I'm not thinking of giving up Cuevas, it´s a unique stretch of water, ideal for beginners and experts to train. You have to continually Tack to get to the other end, then Reach or Run back.
Remember “Practice makes Perfect”and the Mediterranean Sport Centre has all that you need.
To make full use of this facility perhaps the Laser Company would operate a Laser Centre there. I know its minute in comparison with Weymouth and Portland but we need some thing like that to help Dinghy Sailing grow in Southern Spain . I can see it now: the Laser Bug, the Pico, the 4.7 etc. I wonder what “Theresa Zabell” would think of that idea; perhaps we will e-mail her.
You would think with a coastline of more than 4.000 km and with all the inland lakes, Dinghy Sailing would be a fast growing sport. It is for the Big Yachts. His Majesty Juan Carlos II is a true fan of the sport: racing his TP 52. We have the Volvo Ocean Race out of Alicante: the Americas Cup at Valencia: the Two handed Barcelona world Race. The 5 Ocean Race started from Bilbao. The Extreme 40s will be at Almería in October. We have the water and the weather, so what's the problem? It's not a rich man's sport but perhaps it is perceived as such. We could change that with more sailing dinghies on show.
British Sailors are again top of Olympic Racing taking the “Best Nation Prise” at the Delta Lloyd Regatta. Gold Medals in the Finn, Laser and the Women´s Keel boat, Silver in the Finn and Bronze in the 49er and 2.4mR.
I need some time off if I am going to design and build the “Kiddy Cat” for Cuevas, so see you in September, I´ll be keeping you up to date with our news. So watch this space.
Take care and keep out of the Sun
