Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 21st January 2010
Hola, “Happy and Healthy New Year to You All”.
Having been de-railed by a change of tablet, I´m back on track with my old tablet, loking forward to Fun and Frolics on the High Seas. The New Year has started good, we can launch any thing and every thing down the New Slipway “with a little care and attention”. Although our Club House “el Rincon del Puerto”on the Garrucha Marina has closed until the end of February are we down-hearted NO!! the enthusiasm for the Club keeps growing. When there has been no sailing, the Lads and Lasses have been working on the boats in the Dinghy Park.
As a result our 17ft 6 in. “Osprey” took to the water on Sunday with a full set of sails, with Lynne at the helm, David and Lyndon as Crew ! I think it´s time for me to don my wet suit and get the Pastinaca Dinghy on the water. Jim is back with “Pelwis” on the Marina and looking for crews .
At the end on February it´s Aguilas Carnaval Regatta, it,s for Cruises but who knows, we may be involved, remember our Frank, Won the Easter Regatta last year.
What would I like to see happen this year ? How about our Optimists (3) and Toppers (2) on the water with Youngsters sailing them, the “420´s” increase in number, we have two in the Club.
I would welcome the Laser Class : 4.7 , Radial and Standad, the Snipe, for all ages and how about a “Finn” for the heavy weights. All racing Dinghies that you will find at Andalucia sailing Clubs.
I haven´t forgotten the Catamarans, yes, I would like to see the Fleet grow, we have three in the Club. I was looking at a 20 ft cruising Cat a couple of years ago but I think now I would prefer a “Magnum 21ft Trimaran”, it´s fast, you can Sit in it and safer too. If you remember Geoff Holt a Quadriplegic Yachtsman sailed a 16ft Challenger Trimaran around the UK. He sailed 1500 miles and visited 51 destinations.
Back to The “Topper”, if we could build that fleet up, it would be unique in the Mediterranean. Second hand Toppers are car- topable so next time you are in the UK bring one back, thanks !!
From Toppers to Trouble Shooter, Judge Shirley Kornreich of the New York State Supreme Court, has ruled that the “America´s Cup” will be held at Valencia starting on February the 8th ,2010.If you visit Valencia in the next few days, you may see a 115 ft Trimaran and a 114 ft Catamaran, if you do give me a call !
While our club house is closed we will be taking coffee at the “Rufos Cafe Bar”, which over looks the new Marina, hope to see you there, at 11am any Sunday morning.
Take care, John

Another date to remember is Monday the 14th of December our “Annual General Meeting” at the Puntazo Hotel, Mojacar Playa, starting at 8 pm. Prompt, for Club Members and Friends of Santa Irene.
No sailing for me on Sunday the 24th of November, after a little hic-cup with my blood pressure at midnight on Friday. It’s good to know there is a Medico on duty at the Medical Center 24 hours a day. All’s well that ends well, so on Sunday I was at Garrucha to meet with the Lads and Lasses for a coffee and a chat. Then watched as they launched their Dinghies down our new slipway.
Houri was keeping an eye on me and talking to any of the Locals that were out for a walk. One young man and his son that wanted to talk to us was Rodolfo Criado, an experienced sailor and a member of the Andalucian Federación of Sailing. His yacht at this time is a International One Meter, it is a “Model Racing Yacht”, these model yacht sailors can be very competitive, they are often mentioned in the “Yachts and Yachting Magazine”, their website is: www.velarc.es
Our new friend Rodolfo will shortly be opening a Book shop in Vera, Calle del Mar, catering for both Spanish and British customers where you will find your nautical books...I will inform you of the opening date in the near future.
The Extreme Sailing Series Asia, the first of the Series has been completed in Hong Kong, the European Champions “Oman Masirah” finished in 1st place on the Podium. Pete Cummings, the skipper and Omani Sailor Khamis Al Anbouri, who we met in Almería, were over the moon, you will soon see them on our website. Shirley Robertson finished 4th, sailing “Rumbo Almería”, next Venue will be Singapore, 11th to the 15th of December.
Look forward to meeting you on Sunday morning, 11 am, Garrucha. Take care,
John Talliss
