Do you remember the last Sunday of May? I my diary, I have ritten: Dull and Rain! I thought not much is going to happen today. Arriving at the Dinghy Park early, I decided to leave the cover on the safety boat; Karen and Stan arrived, time for a coffee at “El Rincon” inside of course. Normally, we would occupy a row of tables outside, looking for any new arrivals on the Marina. Slowly, members started to arrive, thankfully looking inside; I guess they could hear the laughter. As we were being served our coffees, Ian said: “who needs a Club House?”, It had the feel of a Sailing Club with pictures of sailing boats on the walls...
There were 26 of us, Swinging the Lamp as we used to say in the Navy, thank you lads and lasses for you commitment.
Just after midday, they were rewarded, clear sky and sun, it turned out to be a good sailing day, even in the light wind. The following weekend, was equally good, with 4 cruisers on the water. Nice to have Sue back, sailing her “Macgregor”, also Rosie and Steve in their “Beneteau” and David sailing the big “Catalac Catamaran” with an all girl crew. A big thank you Jo for helping me to sort out the “Topper”, it´s a boat that can teach you to sail and race of course, a wet boat but that should´nt worry the youngsters. If you want to stay dry, try the “pastinaca” or “wayfarer”,or you maybe invited to sail on one of our Cruisers.
Should you become a member, which one day I hope you will, you will have the opportunity to go on the water in our “RIB” along side a competent helms man and be part of a Sport which is for all ages.
I have missed it again “The Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta” at Palma, Mallorca” racing Dinghies that will be in the Olympics. The UK. were top of the Medal table again; wining 8 Medals: 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze.
Ben Ainslie, sailing in the “Finn” class, collected a Gold Medal and was the ultimate winner of the Trophy. The other Gold Medalists were: Giles Scott in a “Finn” and Paul Goodison in a “Laser”. The Sponsor of this event were “Mapfre” once again!
You may know, I have a passion for the little “Optimist” and the kids that they sail them. I´ve been to many regattas where there were more than 100 of them; can you imagine what 855 would look like? That was the number at the 29th Lake Garda, Italy, Optimist Open Meeting, held last month.
Next time I write, “Sheba” our micro sailing cruiser will be on the water, I´m inviting you to come and see her on her berth, at Garrucha Marina.
Take care.
