Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 19th October 2011

Yet again another two weeks of light winds but our sailors have enjoyed it. The safety boat has been there to tow the dinghies out of the harbour, usually the wind has increased in the early afternoon to blow them back to Port. We can sail during the week days; last Tuesday, Steve was out sailing in “Casi Casi” testing his new mainsail, the 16 ft. “Wayfarer” was there too with Michael at the helm. If you fancy Dinghy Cruising you should consider buying a “Wayfarer”, the ideal dinghy the cruise the coastline.

You can pull in at any beach that looks good, take your sleeping bag and stay over night, then carry on the next day. If you want to know more, you should read the adventures of Frank and Margaret Dye;They not only cruised around the UK. but have been to the Shetland Isles, North America, Canada, Greece, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden and Denmark including the North Sea crossing to Norway and Iceland; I recommend you read their books.

Although I have been busy working on my “Kittywike”, I did make time to visit Almería where the “Extreme 40 Catamarans” were racing. We were there on Friday the 14th the middle of the 5 day event, again it was light winds, nevertheless we enjoyed our day with Lea and Les, who were members of our Club 5 years ago, they now live in Central America enjoying their dream crewing on luxury Yachts.

Back to the “Extreme 40 Catamarans”, we were able to meet Ben Aislee who was only able to race in 3 Events and finished on Podium in two of them; it´s now time for him to get focused on the Olympics at Portland next year. The winner of this 5 day events, where there were 32 races, was the Switz boat “Alinghi”, 2nd “Luna Rosa”, 3rd “Oman Air”.

The overall results after 8 events around the World is: “Luna Rosa” with 69 points, “Edmond Rothschild” 68 points, 3rd “Emirates Team New Zealand” 60 points. The final event will be in Singapore in December.

More sailing news in two weeks time; remember, you can visit us any Sunday at el “Rincón del Puerto” Guarrucha Marina.

Take care
