Santa Irene Club de Vela Newsletter - 20th February 2012
Friday the 10th of February, a date I will remember and celebrate in the Future. It was the annual Dinner and Dance of the Club, members and friends had gathered together to enjoy the evening. At the end of last year I had steped down as “el Presidente” after 10 years, one day I will write the story. Towards the end of the evening I was introduced as the “Founding Member” and received a number of Gifts.
First was a “Glass Plaque” inscribed with the words: “In recognition for your work as the founding member of our Club...” and the Title of :” Lifetime Honorary President”. Next was a Large framed Photograph of yours truly at the helm of the “Drascombe”, I recall Vic our Vice President taking the photo then much to my surprise a Superbe Camara, which means I can now record the many sailing Events I hope to visit in the future. Hopefully, one will be the Olympic Sailing at Weymouth and Portland; I know them well. The Navy taught me to sail and race in Portland Harbour, it was 1947, there were Warships from many of our Alies.
I was demobbed in 1949 , the first thing I bought was a “ National 12” Racing Dinghy and “Chase Water” in the Midlands was my first Club. In 1964, wanting to sail on the Sea I moved to the South Coast. There, I joined the “Highcliffe Sailing Club” at Christchurch Harbour. In 1970, we built a new Club House which is situated on the end of Mudeford Quay and I became Rear Commodore. 1974, I took up cruising and moved to Poole Harbour, owning first a “Cobra 28”, later a “Southerly 28” which was more confortable for my First Mate: Ethel Irene. We were Berthed at “Cobbs Quay” in Poole (Dorset), until moving to Spain (Mojacar) in 1985.
My sincere Thanks to Victor Benson, who joined me on the “Indalo Playa” with his “Catamaran”, it was January 2003 and has always been there to move the Club forward.
Our New President is Ian Roriston, a Young Man ! in comparison with us Oldies who created the Club. He is well used to both sail and power, so we are in good hands, and we are looking to a bright future.
We hope to see you any Sunday Morning at Garrucha Marina.
Take care
